With the previous season’s NBA Finals ending in June for the first time since 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic began, the period for free agency returned to its normal July 1 starting date, along with the July moratorium period before players can actually begin signing new contracts.
The 2022 NBA draft took place on June 23, 2022, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Paolo Banchero was selected with the first overall pick.

Although the 2022 NBA Finals just started, it’s never too early to start thinking about what’s ahead for the league.

- July 5-7: Salt Lake City Summer League (Grizzlies, Thunder, 76ers, Jazz)

- Feb. 17-19: 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend/All-Star Game in Salt Lake City
The start date for the regular season hasn’t been announced yet, but there are still some key dates for the offseason as well as the 2022-23 season that are beneficial to keep an eye on with the current season coming to a close.
Free agency dates also have yet to be officially announced, but we do know the date for the NBA Draft, when Summer League will take place in Las Vegas and which weekend the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City will be held.
Though the start date for free agency hasn’t been officially announced yet by the league, expect it to start at the end of the June (likely June 30).
Predictions
The Celtics’ acquisitions of Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari after coming out of the Eastern Conference last season would seem to set them up as the odds-on favorites to repeat. We’re just not buying it.
Khris Middleton’s absence impacted Milwaukee big time in the 2022 NBA Playoffs. We’re talking about a 20-point scorer with three-and-D capabilities.
With Middleton out, the Bucks had to rely on Jrue Holiday to be their second-leading scorer behind Giannis Antetokounmpo.
That’s a less-than-ideal scenario. While it’s close, we’re going to give the Bucks the slight advantage here.
As for the defending conference runner-ups, these Heat are looking to make a big splash. That includes being linked to both Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell in trade talks. Should general manager Pat Riley and Co. make a move of that ilk, it changes the dynamics big time.
2022–23 NBA season draft
The 2022-23 NBA draft the 77th edition of the National Basketball Association’s annual draft, was held on June 23, 2022, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The 2022 edition marked a return to the draft’s normal June date after postponements were made in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The draft consisted of 58 picks instead of the typical 60 due to the loss of a second-round pick for both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat for violating the NBA’s tampering rules during free agency.
The 8th G League Elite Camp took place May 16–17, from which certain participants will be selected to join the main draft combine.[61] Of this year’s 44 participants in the Elite Camp, seven players were chosen to continue on to the main draft combine: Jared Rhoden, Tyrese Martin, Kenneth Lofton Jr., Bryson Williams, Darius Days, Jalen Wilson, and Marcus Sasser.
